SAL FOLLIES
SIZZLING SOUSA opened the first annual “SAL Follies” with a group of South Bend personalities: School Superintendent Mike Morris, Mayor Karl Heinicke, City Superintendent Steve Russell, and the former girls’ basketball coach Gary Wilson under the tutelage of “Drill Sgt.” Bertha “Bert” Koplitz. This is the first time Bert has worked with guys, but she’s whipped them into shape. Hilarious! Phil Davis and Lew Chapman are the “Sousa Musicians.”
SPUD & THE NERD made up of Wyatt “Spud” (13), Warren (10), Claire (17), Laurel (15), Melina (26), and Jia Tai (4) are a new development in the musical Backholm family of Aberdeen. The Backholms are gaining a reputation for being great entertainers (Zona Calde) on the Twin Harbors, and all of them are musically talented. Today was the first appearance for “Spud & the Nerds” at the Raymond Theatre.
DICK REYNOLDS first musical performance was in a grade school operetta, “The Slip of the Slipper”—sort of like “Cinderella.” There wasn’t a part for him so one was invented, and he even had a couple of solos. He has fond memories of participating in the local Willapa Harbor Chorale. He played a rendition of “Wonderful World” accompanied by Rick Gauger.
DEANE McCOY claims his favorite musical memory is playing a pump organ for the Army battalion chapel which got him out of other work! His grandmother (a church organist) and his mother were his inspirations. While his mother was too busy raising a family to practice herself, she made sure that Deane did. He enjoys playing the Raymond Theatre’s Wurlitzer organ.
MICHAEL TURNER developed a “yo yo habit” three years ago at the age of 12 when someone gave him a yo yo and a book of tricks. He learned more advanced tricks from a yo yo online community and watching videos by stars such as Sterling Quinn and Andre Boulay. This inspired him to design some tricks of his own. He’s competed on the yo yo ladder and in freestyle, at the Pacific County Fair and through 4-H. He and his yo yo once parted company during a practice at this theater.
DANIELLE de MONTIGNY has special memories of doing musicals at the Bishop Center at Grays Harbor College. After a practice for a 4-H talent show at this theater last year, she was told some crystals from the chandeliers were found on the floor. After Danielle’s second performance, more crystals fell while she was singing “Think of Me” from _Phantom of the Opera_! She sang “The Voice”, a contemporary Celtic song by Brendan Graham, and “The Laughing Song” by Johann Strauss from _Die Fledermaus_, accompanied by Kari Hasbrouck.
BARBARA HUBBARD & STEVE FLEMETIS play harmonica (Steve) and guitar (Barbara) and also sing. Steve was inspired by his dad George who played harmonica, and the singing comes naturally because many of his family are vocally talented. His brother Randy played in “Boss Tweed” in the ‘60s and ‘70s when everyone went to the movies at the theater because it only cost 35 cents then! Barbara and Steve performed “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” Daddy’s Hands” and “Blow, Wind, Blow.”
LEW CHAPMAN & DOUG BACKHOLM have appeared on this stage and other local venues with the popular premiere jazz quartet, “Zona Calda”. Meaning “Hot Spot”, that group also features the honey-smooth voice of Melina Backholm.Lew Chapman played in Army bands and toured the world with many renowned musicians.
